When stressed, we often go to junk foods and vice for comfort, neglecting their harmful effects to our overall health.

Stress increases the body’s cortisol, thereby creating cravings for sweet or salty food. These cravings lead to binge eating, which in turn leads to weight gain and increases one’s chances of developing heart ailments or other cardiovascular diseases.

For whatever reason you’re eating too much out of stress, these hacks might help you purge the bad habit and get your health right back on track.

Look for effective relaxation techniques

The next time you’re stressed, stop whatever you’re doing and breathe slowly. When you’re starting to feel overwhelmed, pause and yes – write. Taking note of the causes of your anxiety can help you regain control over your life and diminish stress. Apart from breathing techniques and note-taking, you can try listening to music or taking anti-stress multivitamins. Don’t use stress as an excuse to cheat on your diet or neglect your commitment to being healthy.

Cope in healthier ways

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Eating one’s feelings.” Some people use food to deal with strong emotions such as anger and frustration. It’s okay to eat out your feelings if the urge to do so comes rarely, but it’s definitely something to avoid if it’s morphing into a habit. Healthier ways of coping with stress is talking to friends and family, keeping a journal, and of course, exercising.

Get enough sleep

Being overworked with less than eight hours of sleep can take its toll on your health. Because you’re sleep-deprived, you feel sluggish throughout the day and your body will crave more food to convert into energy. If you must stay up late, drink lots of water the day after. Keeping yourself hydrated helps you stay energized.

Out of sight, out of mind

To avoid falling into stress-eating, make it difficult to reach your snacks. Place them somewhere obscure or hard to reach. This way, once you’re caught up in work or stress, you won’t be tempted to reach for a treat and in the process, ruin your diet. You might even end up forgetting where you stashed your treats altogether.
